Research Profile

I have been working on how to help the users to overcome information overload by making use of intelligent (personalized) user interface, especially in the domain of information retrieval and visualization. The main assumption is that users will be able to benefit from the interaction with the system that can understand user needs actively. The users themselves are not just passive recipient, but an active player in this picture who are eagerly willing to manipulate and control the system. They are like collaborating with the system, by letting the system learn about themselves (personalization), perceiving the problem space and the state of the system’s learning (visualization), and commanding the system to move to the appropriate direction.

Therefore, I have been working on projects that strongly focus on fortifying user ability for personalized information retrieval and access problem. The examples are open (visual) user models, user profile mediation for personalized searching, named-entity based information search/browsing, and reference point-based spatial visualization for user models. Those works were published in major journals or conferences including IPM, IVS, and WWW.
