Online resume: http://gent.uab.es/gzarza

Over the last ten years, I’ve been living, studying and working in 3 different countries (Argentina, Spain and Norway), where I have had the opportunity to get to know and interact with people from contrasting cultures. Along that time, I have managed to keep an active social life while being among the top students, managing multiple projects without loosing attention to detail. I consider that many of the skills I’ve developed during this time are transferable and highly valuable in any dynamic work environment.

I’ve always been proactive, highly motivated, and eager to face challenges. From an early age, I have been self-taught. At just 14 years old, I designed a complete website about the solar system and space programs because there were no complete websites in Spanish at that time. It has always been one of my hobbies. Three years later, I decided to move to a different state (over 700 miles away from my home, family and friends) to study Computer Science Engineering. It wasn’t easy at all, but the combination of hard work, determination and sound organizational skills led me to complete my studies earlier than expected, as first graduate of the class. In early 2007, I moved to Barcelona, where in four years I finished two masters degrees and the PhD in High-Performance Computing with the European Doctorate Mention (obtained after a 3-months research stay at the Simula Research Laboratory, Norway).

I gained valuable experience in engineering working as intern at the Web Engineering team of my University in Argentina, where I developed skills on web-based systems and user interfaces. The commitment of my team was noticed and we were soon commissioned the development of the University’s Learning Objects Repository. Additionally, we were selected to represent the University in several programming contest, including the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest. This experience developed my ability to take responsibilities and work under pressure.

Teamwork and projects were a constant part of my education, not only in Argentina but also in Spain, where I worked on a multidisciplinary and multicultural team at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona. Our research group had students and professors from different faculties and 14 differ- ent countries, such as Australia, Vietnam, India, Germany, Poland, Spain, Brazil and Argentina, among others. Learning to deal with this cultural and academical diversity was an enriching experience.

Best regards,
Gonzalo Zarza

I am a sixth year Ph.D student at Carnegie Mellon University, in the Electrical & Computer Engineering department. I work in the Parallel Data Lab (PDL) and am advised by Professor Greg Ganger. My research interests span the field of computer systems, including file systems, with a focus on cloud computing.

My long term research goal involves building self-healing systems, which are capable of fixing problems automatically without human intervention. Such automation is necessary, given the rapidly increasing scale and complexity of modern clouds and datacenters.

As a first step, I have been researching techniques for helping developers diagnose complex performance problems in distributed services—for example, by automatically localizing the root cause of a problem from the myriad components in the system to just a few relevant interactions. My work on request-flow comparison, one particular technique, has been published in NSDI. Moving forward, I hope to use these techniques as a strong substrate on which to build tools that are capable of automatic corrective action. I hope to collaborate with researchers in machine learning, statistics, and HCI to take steps toward this larger goal.

My PhD is in the area of efficient algorithm synthesis, under the supervision of Doug Smith and William Cook. My dissertation is about how to systematically synthesize efficient algorithms from formal specifications within an automated software engineering framework. I am highly motivated by the goal of solving practical problems. In my dissertation I identify a class of problems that can be efficiently solved by best first search, as well as providing an algorithm schema for doing so, and a methodology by which a solution can be developed. I also show how to semi-automatically synthesize efficient algorithms for NP-hard problems such as Planning that leads to domain-specific planners that are much faster than state of the art automated ones.

I also have 12 years of industrial experience in both R&D labs and software development divisions involving all phases of software development from initial conception to final code production. During this time I worked on program generation (Inferdata and Nasa Ames), program comprehension tools (Semantic Designs), software architecture (Evolve), and software tools (Oracle). Please refer to my CV for more details.

I am interested in both applying some of my research ideas in practical settings as well as incorporating them (in a form of lightweight synthesis) into existing tools. Either way, there are a number of directions in which I feel they could be extended. A particular area of interest is in the direction of handling uncertainty and multi-player scenarios (e.g. for contingent planning, controller synthesis, etc)
