POSITION SUMMARY: The Scientific Computing Group has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral fellow to work on the development of computational algorithms and their application to scientific areas that are of interest to DOE and LBNL.
DUTIES: The successful candidate will participate in research activities related to large-scale scientific applications that are relevant to DOE and LBNL. Of particular interest are computational problems in large-scale nuclear structure calculations. The research activities will include the analysis of the performance profile and algorithmic complexity of existing computational codes; the improvement of the efficiency and reliability of existing codes; and the development of novel computational algorithms on petascale high performance computers for the scientific applications. The current focus of the computational algorithms is on sparse matrix computation, as well as discrete and combinatorial mathematics.
QUALIFICATIONS : Required -Ph.D. in Mathematics or Computer Science within the last 3 years is required, with a strong background in computational mathematics. Some knowledge of discrete mathematics and physics is desirable. The successful candidate should be able to program proficiently in C++ and Fortran, and should have experience in parallel computing and MPI. The candidate also should have some knowledge of performance optimization for large-scale scientific codes. Excellent communication skills are essential.
NOTES: This is a 1-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal. Salary for the postdoctoral position depends on years of experience post-degree.
