Research Interests:
I work on many topics in core operating systems, distributed systems, Web systems, Web browser architecture, and systems security. My current interests include:
1. Understanding and architecting the Web of the future, particularly reconsidering what a Web program is, what the browser’s future role as a fully-fledged operating system should be, and how to manage (or provoke!) the convergence of desktop OSs with browsers.
2. Building operating systems and distributed systems support for smartphones.
3. Exploring the impact of new technologies on operating systems abstractions and structure. One of my recent projects was to build operating system support for the deterministic execution of multithreaded and multiprocess applications, even on multicore processors. I’d also like to understand the long-term implications of persistent memories (such as phase-change memory) on how we should build operating systems and applications.
