Research Interests:

Customized Online Information Access and Delivery

The diversity of information and viewpoints presented in traditional
media has served as a bedrock of modern democracy, by creating an
educated, well-informed society. Recent trends in personalization and
recommendation threaten this foundation by providing people with
targeted information based on narrowly defined user profiles. Our
project seeks to counter these trends by providing diverse information
of interest to users and communities by aggregating the variety of
structured and unstructured data available online, in a customized
manner. This enables users to broaden their horizons in their online
world, thus avoiding a homogeneous segmentation of users, which may
not be socially desirable.

This is an open ended project, and can lead to research in a wide
variety of topics. Topics of interest include the dynamic and
flexible creation of customized online information, and its scalable
and robust access and delivery. We are interested in working with
researchers with expertise in algorithms, networking, data management
and information retrieval to enable the creation of our vision.

This is joint work with K.K. Ramakrishnan.
