Research Interests:
My research interests focus on several areas related to data management for large-scale, distributed scientific applications. These interests include examining the relationship between data management systems and workflow management systems to improve the execution of data-intensive scientific applications; the use of policies and policy engines to manage distributed scientific data sets, including policy-driven data replication; the design and evaluation of tools for management of large, replicated data sets in real-world scientific environments; and the exploration of peer-to-peer techniques for organizing distributed catalogs for replica management and information management. I manage research and development projects related to data management for several large scientific collaborations, including the Earth System Grid, which provides support for the next generation of climate science; the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory project, which is working to detect gravitational waves; the Biomedical Informatics Research Network (BIRN) Coordinating Center, which provides support to neuroscience groups for collaboration and data sharing; and the Center for Health Informatics (CHI), which provides infrastructure for secure medical data sharing for clinical and research applications.
